1910s VINTAGE BUTTER YELLOW GOWN WITH BLACK MARQUISETTE OVERDRESS - FROM JAMES CAMERON'S TITANIC
LUXURIOUS 1910'S vintage evening gown from JAMES CAMERON'S TITANIC. Butter yellow silk satin with black marquisette overdress. Yellow, blue and black silk embroidery. An authentic period gown that has been painstakingly restored.
Marquisette overdress: Lavish embroidery at neckline, cuffs, waist and hem. V neck and back. Drapped Dolman 1/2 sleeves with wide cuffs. Pleats at shoulders, gathered into waist and attached to satin underdress. Snap and hook closure back right, at waist and right skirt. Black velvet ribbon belt with embroidered medallions front and back. Front panel is open at sides from waist to hem and overlaps back panel. Hem edge is cut geometrically and weighted. Back panel is seamed at underdress sides. Back panel hem is also geometrically cut and weighted to correspond with front panel.
Silk satin underdress: Sculpted plunging V neckline. Spaghetti straps. Fitted bodice with ecru tulle under-bodice. Full length flared skirt with train. Center back and front panels with single pleat at each side.
The gown: A true illustration of Belle Epoque extravagance.
In 1996 we were privileged to contribute wardrobe to the Fox/Paramount production of James Cameron's TITANIC. It is without a doubt, one of the most exciting projects we have ever been associated with. At the end of the enormous production there were naturally pieces that went missing. This gown was one of the pieces traded to us, from the production, as a replacement. All important garments that were purchased by the costume department had TITANIC production labels applied (see photo). There was a conscientious effort made by the costume designer to purchase authentic period pieces, restore them if necessary and protect them during production. They were stored in the safety of individual boxes and only brought out when a scene required them. This gown has been in our private collection since that time. It has been archivally & painstakingly stored for safekeeping. This is the first time it is being offered for public consideration.
Label:
TITANIC
Approximate measurements:
Bust - 34"
Waist - 26"
Hip - 40"
Front skirt length measured from waist to hem edge - 42"
Back skirt length measured from waist edge to train edge - 60"
Hem - 3"
Condition:
Considering it's use in a film production and the early period of the gown it is in very good condition, however, it does have issues. The marquisette is not disintegrating but there are stress fiber pulls and holes at the sleeve pleats and a few of the pleats are unstitched. There are multiple small holes and pin holes scattered here and there. We believe the underdress was copied and replaced, using the original as a pattern. General light soil throughout, especially at hem. Gown is wearable, with some minor restoration required.
